Nigeria’s Ayetoro jazz orchestra led by Funsho Ogundipe release their fourthalbum on their own Funsho label with stunning sleeve artwork by Jennifer Ipekel. The scene is set with the flowing horn groove of the mystical lead cut ‘Orunmila.’ With a rasp here and a tinkle there ‘Langa Pt 1’ conjures up images of a Fred Wesley jam that comes complete with an added mouth organ. ‘La La La’ brings forth a percussive groover with a stonking vocal by Destinée Oniangue. Funsho’s piano to brought to the front with some inspired subtle line that sit proudly with the blasting horns. Shabaka Hutchings clarinet rides the waves for the second take of ‘Langa Pt2’ which provides a short interlude before the album picks up again with the guitar picked ‘In The Still Of The Night.’ The album closes with rip roaring percussive monster of ‘Apala System.’ This is one top collection of African fused jazz and destined to be up there in our end of year selections as one of the best.
